While there possibly could have been machines dispensing holy water in Egyptian temples in 215 BC, the first commercial vending machines were invented in London in the 1880s to sell postcards. Around the same time, English publisher Richard Carlisle created a machine for vending books. America’s first vending machine came in 1988, when the Thomas Adams Gum Company installed tutti-trutti gum machines on train platforms. The iconic round gumball machines we still see today were created later, in 1907. Horn & Hardart had a similar idea in 1902 when they opened a restaurant run entirely on coin-operated machines. Finally, the drink vending machines that we know and love today took their first big steps during the 1940s thanks to Vendorlator Manufacturing Company.

eVendingWhen you hear the term “reverse vending machine,” you might imagine a traditional snack machine turned upside down, or perhaps a bag of chips walking up to a machine to purchase humans. Well, reverse vending machines do exist, but they are not as out there as they might sound.

Through a unique partnership, Dubai’s Tecom Business Parks just launched the ReVa reverse vending machine. A collaboration between Enpark, Averda, and Air Miles, the machine allows customers to exchange plastic bottles and aluminum cans for Air Miles points, which yeild users a variety of shopping rewards. Customers receive two Air Miles per unit recycled at any of the 15 ReVa machines in the Tecom parks.

“By making recycling more accessible, the ReVa reverse vending machine is also working to change the habits of those working in and living near Tecom free zones,” said Enpark director Saad Bin Ghubash in a recent Trade Arabia article. Not only does the ReVa offer excellent rewards to users, but it encourages a habit of recycling that benefits the entire world in the end.

The new “CAT rack” bulk operator makes using small candy and gumball vending machines easier than ever, while no longer limiting their customer base to those who have a few loose quarters around.

Short for Currency Activated Technology, the CAT rack acts as a central hub for a series of small snack vending machines. Customers can insert a dollar bill into the rack, after which they can freely choose which vending machine they would like to receive a treat from. Novelty vending machines such as the ones found in movie theaters and supermarkets typically force consumers to find somewhere to make change, but the CAT rack finally makes the dollar useable with a quarter machine. The device is currently being tested in upper Manhattan, New York.

While this device is only being tested on mini vending machines, the potential of the CAT rack is endless. The CAT’s creator would like the product to evolve to the point of cashless transactions and become compatible with new point of sale methods.
