Snacking at Work

Desktop Snacking

Snacking in between meals is becoming a norm for people of all ages in today’s world. We do this for a variety of reasons. Some people just prefer to eat smaller portions and more times a day, while others just don’t have the time to sit down and have a proper meal. Unfortunately, this makes us all vulnerable to unhealthy snack products that could potentially decrease our productivity (by making us sleepy, or even more hungry) and ultimately, don’t have any nutritional value to get us through the day.

Here are some ideas to make help us snack a little more healthily:

  1. Fresh Fruit
Try cutting up and keeping some Apples, bananas, grapes, strawberries, and any other fruits in Ziploc bags that can be stored in the office fridge/cooler. These are great to munch on while working on something at your desk
  2. Nuts & Seeds
Nuts and seeds have healthy natural fats and will be able to keep you full till your next meal. Next time you’re at the grocery store, just grab some wholesale and unprocessed almonds, cashews or sunflower seeds
  3. Oats
Oats are another easy fix to a meal. You can keep some instant oats by your desk and just walk over to the kitchen to add some hot water (extra points for taking that walk!) or you could make overnight oats at home and bring them in with you
  4. Snack Bars
There are a ton of different bars in the market today, but many of them are packed with sugar and unnatural flavorings. A great rule of thumb is to look for bars with a high protein content, low-sugar, and no weird ingredients
  5. Hard-Boiled Eggs
Eggs are basically protein-packed food. You can boil these in the morning while you’re getting ready for work and just 2 eggs will get you through that mid-day slump
  6. Vegetables & Dip
Cut some carrots, celery and broccoli and keep them in Ziploc bags for some very healthy snacking while you work. If you’re a dip-kind of person, try hummus or Greek yogurt dips
  7. Whole-wheat Bread & Nut Butter
Keep some whole-wheat bread at your table and have a slice or two with Peanut Butter or Almond Butter if you don’t have time for lunch and need a quick snack that’ll fill you up
  8. Protein Shake
Protein shakes are a great way to hit your protein goals for the day. Most of them are also low calorie, low-sugar and low-carbs. Protein makes you feel full pretty quickly, so just one serving and you should be good till dinner timeHealthy Snacking

Eating Healthy is Easier Thanks to Tweeting Vending Machine

May 19th, 2014 | Posted by DT in Snack vending machines - (Comments Off on Eating Healthy is Easier Thanks to Tweeting Vending Machine)

For health-conscious consumers or those trying to break a bad candy habit, a hacked vending machine tweets all purchases. Unlike regular snack machines, this one tells members of a private social media account about all the purchases made by the group’s members.

The tweeting vending machine originates in the UK. A group of hackers and programmers bought a vending machine off eBay, modified it to send tweets and use it to encourage purchasers to make healthier snack choices.

Users of the tweeting machine initially showed amusement at it. However, they soon became annoyed with the exposure of their snack purchases. Thus, the machine has been shut down for now.

New and existing vending machine companies may not want to build a tweeting machine, but combo drink snack machines that provide healthy options do exist. They can feature anything from fresh salads, pre-packaged vegetables, flavored water and granola bars.

Healthy vs. Unhealthy Vending Options

According to the Center for Disease Control, 69.2 percent of adults 20 years of age or older are overweight. Therefore, it is obvious America has a big problem with health and weight. Although eating habits regarding breakfast, lunch and dinner are the most important, what individuals snack on is also very key when trying to reduce weight. Therefore, learning how to choose good food out of a vending machine is a wise idea in order to maintain a healthy weight. Below is a list courtesy of Emily Saunders, a fitness trainer, of bad and good food choices found in typical vending machines:

Bad foods:Combo Vending Machine
All snack cakes, cookies and chips should be avoided completely. This is due to the fact that this food will cause a spike in blood sugar. In addition, they contain empty calories, which leaves individuals feeling hungry again soon after consuming them. It is also important to not be fooled by foods that “look” healthy such as Fig Newtons or oatmeal cookies, because they are in reality just sugar filled cookies with no nutritional value.

Good foods:
Look for sunflower seeds, beef jerky or bags of peanuts when trying to find a healthy option in a vending machine. These food contain protein and will help individuals feel full longer. If individuals have to have something sweet, select a bag of peanut M&M’s, which contains both the sweet aspect and the protein element.

If you think you may buy vending machines and are interested in a vending machine combo, the above information is likely helpful.

Futura Vending MachineKeeping up with technological advancements is important in every business, and the vending machine business is no different. As an owner of such a business, you likely want to know what new useful advancements have been made in the vending industry. Read below to learn about the best new technology available today for vending machines:

Credit card reader:
In today’s society, many people do not carry cash. Therefore, it is important for vending machines to be equipped to use debit and credit cards. Thankfully, this technology is now available in the form of credit card readers. In addition to giving your machine credit card reading capabilities, this innovative technology also gives you the ability to monitor your vending machine transactions from a remote location thus allowing you to keep up with your profit.

Changing the machines themselves:
There have been many changes in the vending machine industry in regards to the appearance and functionality of the machines themselves. This new technology has allowed a huge increase in the amount of items that can be sold in a vending machine. In the past, chips and sodas were the primary fare of vending machines. Today, coffee, water, healthy snacks, salads, sandwiches, pie and even pizza are being sold out of vending machines. However, small snacks such as chips and peanuts and sodas are still the primary and most popular contents.

Vending machine technology has continued to evolve over the years. As a vending machine manufacturer, eVending knows you likely want to keep on top of useful vending machine technology. The technologies listed above are just a couple of the many advancements that have improved the vending machine industry.

Cashless Trends

October 14th, 2013 | Posted by DT in Snack vending machines | Vending machines for sale - (Comments Off on Cashless Trends)

Snack MachinesCashless payments are more popular than ever. Retailers, restaurants, online stores and even utility companies are switching (or more than likely have switched) to some form of digital payment. For retailers, the use of NFC technology has become increasingly popular. This technology allows customers to use credit and debit cards with small chips or cell phones with NFC technology to interact with NFC readers and make cashless payments without having to swipe a card or scan anything.

For credit and debit card users, payment options are becoming even easier as well. Especially for small businesses or vending machine operators, there are more and more options available that are easy to use. For retailers, products such as Apple’s Square card reader give small businesses the ability to process credit and debit card transactions with only a Square device and their Apple iPad or iPhone. New vending machines for sale like the Futura models from eVending have card readers that give patrons the option to pay for snacks and drinks with credit and debit cards. For vending operators, this feature also creates opportunities to track transactions and monitor machine performance.

Finding Yourself, Online

September 30th, 2013 | Posted by DT in Snack Machines | Snack vending machines - (Comments Off on Finding Yourself, Online)

According to a study conducted by the Pew Research Center, 56% of internet users have searched for themselves online. Often, when people think about others searching for themselves on Google they think that it is an exercise in vanity and that they just want to see their own names on their computer monitors.

Increasingly though, people are having to search for themselves in order to maintain control of their online presence. Searching for a person online is an easy way to quickly gain information about the person and if your search results are not positive, this can damage a potential employer’s view on you.

For small businesses, searching for your own company on Google can help you find information that may be helping or hurting your business. If you own snack machines from eVending in various locations but don’t have an online presence, searching for “vending machines at (location)” can help you find if anyone has commented about them. Searching for the building or location your vending machines are in as well can often lead to discoveries of helpful news or reviews.

If you don’t like what you see online about your business, or if you don’t see anything at all, you should be proactive and engage with customers and communities online to help create a positive image for your business.

Dare to Be Tender Vending Campaign

September 9th, 2013 | Posted by DT in Snack Machines | Snack vending machines - (Comments Off on Dare to Be Tender Vending Campaign)

Modern societies are often criticized for our detachment from others. While we are more connected to each other than ever before through tools such as social media, emails, cell phones, and text-messages, face-to-face interactions and awareness of what is around us are suffering. One chocolate company is working to help us unite and “Dare to Be Tender” in their new marketing campaign that employs a very purple cow.

Swiss chocolate company Milka introduced a new vending machine in a public area in Argentina that encourages strangers to come together and join hands with one another in order to create a “chain of tenderness” between their chocolate snack machine and a branded purple cow statue. Once enough hands were joined to connect the statue’s hoof to a large button on the machine, free chocolate bars dispensed for all those participating.

As the vending continued throughout the day, the cow statue was moved farther and farther away from the machine, requiring more and more people to join hands. eVending agrees that there are few things more joyous than receiving free chocolate bars and this video created by Milka of this cultural-awareness lesson by a vending machine is very fun to watch.

Healthy Vending Options in Hospitals

August 12th, 2013 | Posted by DT in Snack vending machines | Vending machine - (Comments Off on Healthy Vending Options in Hospitals)

British hospitals are receiving criticism for their vending machine selections. Snack vending machines in English hospitals offer a fairly standard line-up of snack choices. The criticism is due to the lack of healthy choices and a tendency to offer high-calorie snacks from vending machines in an establishment that is supposed to promote and exemplify health.

A survey performed by the World Cancer Research Fund found that 73% of English health trusts do not have a policy on the food sold in their vending machines. 67% of hospitals that responded stated that they offered at least one healthier option for each product type, but that falls behind Welsh and Scottish policies. In both other nations, their governments have had guidelines in place for hospital vending machines since 2008 that recommend they be stocked with at least 30% healthier choice products.

The main concern comes from high-calorie snacks’ relation with obesity, which is a factor in the hospitalization of many patients that the snacks will be sold to, as well as making sure health providers send a clear message on good nutrition. While common vending machine snacks will still be sold, offering healthier options will give patients, staff and visitors that are often in hospitals for long periods of time options that will be better for their diets.

eVending has found that policies and guidelines similar to those in currently in place in the United Kingdom are taking hold in many US hospitals, giving patients, staff and visitors healthier vending options.
